Antique Chinese Porcelain Song Dynasty (906-1279) Jian Ware Hare's Fur Tea Bowl

  

For sale is an Awesome ancient piece of glazed ceramic Chinese art. It is a tea bowl called Jian ware which is black glaze with brownish orange hare's fur markings. This bowl is not a reproduction as many of the pieces for sale are. It has normal wear consistent with burial since ancient times and potting blemishes associated with crude hand production. The true authentic pieces were fashioned by hand.

This piece has two repairs to the upper rim. However, the repairs do not show on the exterior of the tea bowl. This type of bowl was held in high esteem by the Song scholar-official class and even the emperors.

The famous calligrapher and high official in the Northern Song court designated the "hare's fur" tea bowls from Jian'an the most appropriate utensil in serving tea in his two chapter treatise on tea, entitled A Record of Tea. He believed the white tea looked best in black glazed bowls and the slightly thicker wall of Jian wares helped to retain the heat of tea.
