Auctions is pleased to offer a classic Chinese porcelain Bailuzun Sang de Boeuf or Oxblood Chinese Vase with deer motif, and mahogany lotus leaf motif base. The origin of porcelain pottery-making technology dates back 6000 years to the Neolithic period, and the related technologies and skills were continuously developed throughout early Chinese history. By the time the industry had matured during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279), porcelain was an indispensable item for daily use in all sectors of society and was exported by land and sea. Bailuzun was made exclusively for the imperial court. It is also known as Niutouzun, which means ox-head.

However, it is commonly referred to as Bailuzun, or the Hundred Deer vase, as the image typically painted on its body, and /or handles depicts the auspicious deer. Nown for its endurance, grace, and long life, and is a Chinese symbol for longevity.

Since the Chinese word for deer. Is a homophone for reward, the hundred deer motif represents the wish for a successful career in imperial court service. Sang de Boeuf is a rich and glossy blood red glaze produced by a method that incorporates copper oxide as a coloring agent and firing in a reducing atmosphere, a method first discovered during the Ming dynasty 1368 - 1644.

The technique was perfected during the Qing dynasty. (1644 - 1911), and particularly so during the reign of K'ang Hsi (or Kangxi), when some of the finest pieces of sang de boeuf were created. European potters were not able to master the technique until the 20th century. This sumptuous vase has a bulbous silhouette fanning from the foot, which tapers to the neck, and is elegantly flanked by deer head motif lugs.

The vase measures 8.5 inches in diameter by 11.75 inches in height (21.5 cm by 29.8 cm). It is decorated with a white rim and has a controlled thinning glaze or "bleed", which is also seen on the deer, and very much prized by collectors in the 19th century. It is in very good condition, including shelf wear, small scratches and minor scuffs to the rim and base. A fine collectors piece, it comes with a beautiful mahogany lotus leaf motif base, and would make a superb addition to any collection of Chinese porcelain.
